When you consider "GREAT"
places for recreational opportunities, East Tennessee and
Western North Carolina should be at the top of your list.
Mountain Electric Cooperative's service area has several
golf courses including a magnificent championship course.
There are at least 15 courses; all within an hour drive.
Watauga Lake, served by 5 marinas, offers great skiing,
sailing, camping and picnicking. One can fish for trout,
bass, walleye or catfish anywhere along the 21- mile long
lake.
Trout streams are abundant throughout the countryside.
The high country includes the Appalachian Trail and Roan
Mountain State Park as well as many other trails, which
offer exciting hiking, camping and backpacking possibilities.
You may also choose to explore the back country by horseback
or ATV.
Both public and private lands offer hunting for large and
small game. There are 6 ski slopes with moderate to difficult
skiing. One of the premier NASCAR racing and drag racing
tracks is within a stone throw away. Whitewater rafting
is available for those who are strong of heart. For those
who wish for slower-paced relaxation, Grandfather Mountain,
the Rhododendron Gardens atop Roan Mountain and several
waterfalls provide breathtaking beauty.
There is something for everyone here in our little part
of the world. To view more scenes of the region, enter here.
