Avery County's largest town and county seat is Newland. Avery County has a total area of 247 square miles. The average temperature for January is 31° F and average temperature for July is 66° F. The average rainfall is 51 inches. The county's elevation is 3,589 feet above sea level. Avery County is a rural area located in the Appalachian Mountains of Western North Carolina. It is known as the "High Country" because of the beautiful mountains interlaced with gorgeous streams and valleys. The mountains provide locations for some of the best winter ski slopes in the Eastern half of the nation.
